Understand plug-in, hardwired, and rechargeable options, plus brightness, color temperature, controls, and mounting.

PickHarbor buying guide: this article offers selection criteria, not a claim that products were independently tested. Product specifications and availability can change; verify details with the manufacturer and current seller listing.

Decide what the light needs to do

Under-cabinet lighting can provide task lighting for food preparation, softer ambient light, or both. Decide where shadows fall on your work surface and whether you need light across one short section or a longer run. Measure each cabinet span and note outlets, backsplash materials, and obstacles. A plan based on the actual counter is more useful than choosing a fixture from a product photo alone.

Compare power options

Plug-in fixtures can be straightforward when a suitable outlet is nearby, but cords need a safe, tidy route. Rechargeable or battery-powered lights can avoid a permanent cord, although they require charging or battery replacement. Hardwired lighting may create a cleaner integrated installation, but electrical work can require a qualified professional and must follow local requirements. Read the instructions and understand the installation scope before purchasing.

Understand brightness and color temperature

Brightness is commonly expressed in lumens, while color temperature is commonly expressed in kelvins. These measures describe different things: output and the appearance of the light. Compare lumen information for similar lengths or fixtures, and check whether brightness is adjustable. A warm appearance may feel comfortable in the evening, while a more neutral appearance may suit some work surfaces. Actual results also depend on cabinet height, surface color, and fixture placement.

Choose controls you will actually use

Options may include a physical switch, remote, touch control, motion sensor, timer, or app. A motion sensor can be convenient when your hands are occupied, but placement and sensor behavior matter. Check whether the sensor can be adjusted, whether the fixture stays on long enough for your task, and whether the controls are reachable. App-dependent features are not worth paying for if you do not want another device or account.

Check mounting and measurement

Review the fixture dimensions, mounting method, and included hardware. Adhesive mounting may be convenient but depends on a clean, suitable surface and the manufacturer’s instructions. Screws can provide a different kind of attachment but may not suit every cabinet. Measure the distance from the front edge and consider whether the light source will be visible from normal standing positions. Avoid placing fixtures where heat, moisture, or cleaning products could conflict with their rated use.

Plan for a continuous look

If installing multiple fixtures, compare their color temperature, brightness controls, and how they connect. Some systems are designed to link several bars; others operate independently. Check maximum connected length and the correct accessories instead of mixing components based only on similar appearance. Dimming and color consistency may vary between product lines.

Before you order

Verify measurements, power source, light output, color temperature, dimming behavior, mounting hardware, wet-location limitations, warranty, and return policy. For hardwired systems, plan the installation before buying. No single light type is right for every kitchen: select the option that fits your counter layout, electrical setup, preferred light, and willingness to maintain or install the system.
